The opening titles begin with a boarded up hole in the wall with someone sticking their hands through trying to escape. This is effective as the mise-en-scene is really detailed, the wall is old and made to look as though it is falling apart, it is also patched up in some places and hasn't been decorated. The hands in this shot were also effective as they have made sure that the nails are long and the skin is dirty and old.
The opening titles are quick and jumpy suggesting that the programme is scary, the shots have been recorded in dark rooms and shows only a glimpse of what is happening, adding mystery to the opening titles and not giving away what the programme is about. I found the scene below extremely effective as the room is dark so you can't see where they are and the person is a silhouette making them unidentifiable as you cannot see who they are. I also think that the person smearing blood on the wall works well as you don't know who's it is and why they are doing it. A bit further on in the credits there is another silhouette of another person, this time it is a woman and there is blood dripping down the walls suggesting that more than one person is part of what is happening.
The names of actors then begin to appear. The names are written in block capitals and are written in a font that is modern and but also creepy at the same time. The writing is made to look like the names are written in neon lights which are red, this represents blood and fits in well with the rest of the opening titles as there is a lot of blood seen throughout. The text is also on a background which looks like old and worn down wallpaper, giving a small glimpse of where the programme may be situated.
There is also a shot of a little boy in the corridors of the hotel. The hotel has been made to look like it hasn't been looked after and may be abandoned and run down. The mise-en-scene is effective as the wallpaper is peeling off and he walls haven't been painted at all. The corridor is also long and empty suggesting that the little boy may be there on his own. The lighting is also effective in this shot as there are lots of dark shadows and the shadow of the little boy looks like is it in the wrong place, suggesting that he may not be alone in the hotel.
There are also lots of scenes and shots made to look like someone is looking through the hole in the hotel door, the shot is made to look like it is being looked at through a lens and a little boy dressed in white is standing alone outside. The boys face is very white and pale, making him look like he is dead, making the viewer think about what is happening and why he looks how he does.
There is also a scene where a girl is laying on the bed, two arms then reach out an grab her from below the sheets, stopping her from getting away. This is effective as it makes the viewer jump and suggests that the hotel is not normal and may be haunted. The lighting also worked well in this scene as the light focuses only on the girl and emphasises the arms coming out of the bed.
This scene in the opening titles shows a woman at the end of the corridor dressed in a white dress. The outfit flows as the person moves and makes them look like they are floating and suggests that she is perhaps a supernatural being and not an actual person. The mise-en-scene is also effective in this shot as the wallpaper is peeling and the lighting is dark and eerie to make it spooky and creepy.
Further on in the opening titles there is a close up of the same woman, showing the details of her dress and showing the bottom half of her face, it shows her pale, white skin which fits with the viewers further thoughts that she is a supernatural being and is not alive. The person also has blood dripping down on to her white dress, causing contrast with the bright red blood and white dress.
Throughout the opening titles there are a lot of references and quotes from the Bible referring to God. This suggests that the programme is religious based and may involve prayers and quotes from it. This is also written in the same way the actors names are and fits in with the rest of the opening titles. There is a number of different quotes from the Bible, each one being different and referring to something else that may relate to what is in the programme.
