Editing

This blog post is showing the editing we are carrying out on our film production. After filming the first lot of footage we found that it wasn't long enough once it had been cut and put together following the storyboard. We made some sections of the film opening slow motion as it made the footage more dramatic and we also felt that it may add some extra time to the film opening, however, it was 1minute and 25seconds long and still wasn't long enough and so we added to our storyboard and planned to refilm the footage.

 

 

Once we had filmed the second lot of footage we found that we had a lot more to work with and that when briefly put together and cut it was a lot longer than the first time at around 2minutes and 20seconds, meaning that it was long enough.

 



 

We then went through and used the blade tool to cut the footage where it was needed in order to make sure the match on action in the film was smooth and had a flow to it. We also cut out any footage that we felt didn't work and reordered some pieces to make it flow more.

 

We then went through and removed the sound from the footage so that we could add the appropriate sounds where needed in the footage. We removed the sound from all the footage except the scene where the dog barks as we felt that it would be difficult to add in the sound again and make it look realistic and there was no background noise which made it difficult to hear the dog barking in the scene.

 

 

We then added in the Professional and one of our on Production Companies at the beginning of the film opening. We chose to use Blumhouse Productions as we had researched this production company and felt that it wasn't too long and would fit with our other production company. We then inserted one of our own production companies in afterwards which was short and effective before the film opening began.  

 

Refilming Evaluation

After the first attempt at filming we realised there was not enough sufficient footage to make our film opening successful. We scheduled to re-film, this time including more camera angles and shots to improve it. However, the practical side of this caused us problems as it took up more time and caused inconvenience for us because we had to re-film the entire thing.

It was not possible to use the same location as it was different to reach the original location easily in the first filming attempt. This meant we had to find another setting which took up time. Another problem was that one of the girl's acting a main part in the film was unable to re-film, so we had to find someone else in the short time that we had.

Despite these problems faced, the re-filming was actually a lot more successful the second time than the first. We included more varied camera angles and shots, made the footage longer, and overall collected a lot more professional looking shots which we were then able to cut and edit.

Storyboard - Refilming

Once we had put the footage we filmed together we found that when edited it wasn't long enough. In order to overcome this we had to rethink our film opening and decided to add in some extra scenes. We did this by creating a new storyboard and adding in some extra scenes at the beginning so that it would be longer. This time when we created the storyboard we found that it was a lot longer with the added scenes and also a lot easier to organise and create as some of the scenes were the same. When we used the storyboard filming our footage the second time, we found that it was a lot easier to follow and that we had completed it thoroughly by writing down all the new and different camera angles that we felt would be effective to use. We also found that the storyboard drawings and camera angles were easier to follow and so we completed the filming a lot quicker as we had already filmed some of the footage before and knew what how it should be and what needed improving from the first time we filmed everything.

Practical Task - Typography

For this task I am planning to create a range of outcomes of different Typography types that we could consider using for the title of our film opening 'The Woods'. I began by downloading and using a range of fonts that I felt would be suitable for our genre 'slasher' and the name of our film opening.

I then edited the text in Photoshop to alter it and make it more effective to use as our film opening title. I used a range of different editing techniques such as cloning, sharpening and smudging and I also used a red pen to draw on blood dripping down the letters to add some colour to some of the images. These are the final outcomes of the three different titles:

I feel that the outcomes were all successful as I managed to make them more dramatic and by lengthening, stretching, sharpening and cloning the text and also by adding colour to one of them. I feel that the first and third outcomes are better than the second as the font used fits better with the name of our film opening and I feel that they are more effective than the second one.

Refilming evaluation

Re filming evaluation:

Once we had finished filming out footage the first time round and we collected it all together onto the computer we realised that we didn't have enough footage to cover the time frame that we needed and that it didn't include all the camera angles and shots that we needed. As we had to re film this created a lot of practical issues within our group as we all had to available fairly soon and we had to all be able to get to the same location.

However some of these things weren't possible as in our first set of footage there was a girl who played the girl who gets chased and she was unable to make it for a long time which meant we had to change the person who played that part meaning that we had to re film most of the footage which had her in it with the girl who was going to play her part.

Another practical issue that we encountered was trying to all be able to get back to the same location which we used before which also wasn't possible but as it was a woods within our footage it isn't visible that other parts were filmed in a different location.

Once we had overcome these problems and we had a new set of footage the footage that we obtained was better than the first time and this is due to the fact that we knew what we were going to film with a more detailed storyboard and we knew that we needed more footage with more camera angles in it. Once wed had re filmed it and we collated all of our new footage we had a lot more footage which we were able to edit with and we could cut parts and use. Also the camera angles within our footage were more varied.

Once we had used our other storyboard for the footage that we filmed previously when we put it all together we realised that out footage wasn't long enough. In order to overcome this, this meant as a group we had to re film our footage by adding things in and changing the storyline in order to obtain more footage. As we were re filming our footage as a group this meant that the storyboard had to be re drawn and I took the responsibility of this. The storyboard had to be re drawn because we added am extra scene at the beginning and change certain aspects.

This time during our re film of our footage the storyboard was more helpful as it was done in more detail and there was more images drawn of what needed to be filmed which helped make it easier for us to obtain more footage and make sure that this time round we included more camera angles into our footage. When we were re filming and we used the re drawn storyboard we didn't change any aspects of it and we didn't cut out any of it which helped us to gather the amount of footage we did meaning that we could chose the best bits.

Filming Evaluation - Refilming

Once we had filmed our film opening the first time we found that the footage when had filmed wasn't long enough when we began editing. This was an issue as it meant that the film opening wouldn't be 2 minutes once it had been cut and edited. Due to this issue, we decided to go back to our storyboard and add in some extra scenes at the beginning to ensure that it was long enough.

Once we had redrawn and discussed our storyboard we set a date to refilm our film opening. To begin with we planned to use the same actor and just film the extra scenes needed. However, we had am issue with us all being able to meet on the same day and decided that it would be best to refilm the whole film opening again. This meant that we could use a different location and also allowed us to ensure that every thing looked the same such as the lighting, clothing, actors and location.

We all met on Saturday 16th January at 10am to refilm. We planned for everyone to bring the exact same props as last time and we met at the actors house. We then walked for 10 minutes to the location near by and set up to film.

This time round we were quicker when filming as we had already filmed most of the scenes once before and so knew which camera angles and shots to use and where to set up, this made it a lot easier and meant that we could refilm some sections very quickly. However, the added scenes which we had not filmed before took a little longer as we had to plan where to film and discuss the shots chosen in a lot more detail to get it right. We also had to use a dog in our added scenes and these took considerably longer to carry out and get right.

We found that the weather conditions were a lot better this time round as they were a lot easier and more comfortable to film in and the lighting in the footage made it easier to see some scenes, which were harder to see in the first set of footage filmed. Using a different location was also successful as it was a lot more practical as it wasn't muddy and there were paths available to use when filming.

Once we had finished filming we had ended up with considerably more footage compared to the first time we filmed, which meant that it was long enough for us to use for our film opening and could still be cut and edited and be long enough. This meant that refilming our opening scene was successful and that we could begin to edit and finish our film opening.
